Micron announces technology enablement programme

Memory and storage outfit Micron has announced its new technology enablement programme (TEP), which will provide customers with early access to technical resources and products, including DDR5 DRAM.

Micron said that the programme has been designed to help with the design, development and qualification of next-generation computing platforms that use DDR5.

Qualified partners such as Cadence, Montage, Renesas and Synopsys, will be able to get their paws on DDR5 components and modules, new DDR5 products as they become available and technical resources.

Dell might spin off VMWare

Tin box shifter Michael Dell has decided that he might want to off-load his 81 percent stake in VMware.

The sale is expected to be worth almost $50 billion and will be dealt with by September next year. Dell confirmed the news after submitting a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The potential move, which is in its very early stages and may not happen.  EMC acquired the company 17 years ago in a $625 million deal and Dell, in turn, gained the asset after merging with EMC in 2016.

Dell CEO Michael Dell said that the two companies have innovated for their customers together for nearly 20 years and created substantial growth and value themselves.

Britishvolt signs MOU with Welsh government

Britishvolt has signed an MOU (Memo of Understanding) with the Welsh Government as both parties work together on plans to develop a commercially viable 30 GWh battery manufacturing plant, and supplementary 200MW solar plant, at the former RAF base at Bro Tathan, Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales.

The site was narrowed down from over 40 locations, due to a number of factors including: import/export accessibility, availability of labour and skilled staff, and convenient geographical proximity to customers and local industrial companies.

Datto releases new SaaS protection for MSPs

Cloud based software outfit for MSPs, Datto, announced the availability of the next version of Datto SaaS Protection which it claims is more intuitive to manage and easier to integrate into existing systems.

In Datto’s 2020 Global State of the MSP Report, respondents said that 62 percent of its clients are currently using Microsoft365 cloud services and they expect that 70 percent will be using them within two years.

HPE launches GreenLake cloud services

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) announced a new cloud product for the European market.

Dubbed HPE GreenLake cloud services, the product will be hosted by Interxion, A digital realty company and provider of co-location services in 13 countries.

HPE said that the new offer brings customers the benefits of a managed cloud experience without the complexity of managing data centres, while maintaining ownership and control of their data and workloads.

Underperforming Cylance affected Blackberry

Blackberry took a hammering due to its poorly performing software services arm Cylance according to GlobalData

The company declineed 16 percent in Q1 2020, compared to Q4 2019, due to revenue and gross margin drops in its struggling software services segment, the revenues of which declined by around 12 percent.

Cylance, a part of the software services segment, remained subdued throughout the period, even as cybersecurity demand surged due to increasing work-from-home policies during the pandemic, says GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

Channel leader Bob Stegner installed in IT Hall of Fame

IT industry executive Bob Stegner, admired and respected by colleagues and peers for three decades of commitment to the IT channel and a willingness to help others succeed along the way, is the newest member of the IT Hall of Fame.

Stegner, senior vice president for North American marketing at SYNNEX Corporation since 2007, will be honoured during a virtual ceremony on August 6 during ChannelCon Online 2020, the conference presented by CompTIA, the nonprofit association for the global technology industry.

Remote working is here to stay says Gartner

Gartner has published survey findings of 127 company leaders representing HR, legal and compliance, and finance and real estate, revealing that 82 percent of respondents intend to allow employees to work remotely for some of the time. As companies will need to manage a more complex, hybrid workforce.

Nearly half (47 percent) said they intend to allow employees to work remotely full time going forward. For some organizations, flex time will be the new norm as 43 percent of survey respondents reported they will grant employees flex days, while 42 percent will provide flex hours.

Boston is a distributor and integrator for ActiveStor Ultra, providing customised HPC product and service solutions including installation, configuration and support services globally.

There’s a 145 percent return on investment on hybrid cloud

Organisations that embrace hybrid cloud migration projects can yield a 145 percent return on investment within three years, according to a commissioned study conducted by Forrester Consulting on behalf of Virtana.

The study, which reviewed customer projects completed in the last three years, found that a composite organisation achieved benefits of $2 million by adopting planning and optimisation platforms, such as as Virtana’s CloudWisdom and VirtualWisdom.

Crosslake connects Slough to Paris with fibre

Crosslake Fibre, an international network provider and developer of unique subsea and terrestrial fibre networks, announces today its newest subsea cable project, CrossChannel Fibre.

The  next-generation 550km cable is the first fibre-optic subsea cable to be built across the English Channel in nearly twenty years and will connect Slough, the United Kingdom and Paris.

IBM wants 12 years experience on six year old software

IBM has put out a job advert calling for a candidate with over 12 years of experience with Kubernetes administration and management.

But Kubernetes  has only been out there for six years, so unless Biggish Blue wants time travellers getting the experience is going to be tricky.

The advertisement, which is still live, calls for a “minimum” of 12 years experience in Kubernetes, including “hands-on” experience setting up Kubernetes platforms, deploying microservices and other web applications and managing secure secrets along with container orchestration.

EveryonePrint buys One Q

EveryonePrint has announced that it has bought One Q in a  move, which it’s claimed will enable it to strengthen its offer  and make cloud printing accessible to more customers and partners.

The company said that it will be drawing on the collective expertise of One Q and technologies such as One Client, designed to support its public cloud solution, to flex and scale to meet this increased demand, thus cementing its position as a leader in the cloud printing market.
