IDC claims coronavirus created a Unified Coms boom

The coronavirus pandemic has fuelled a boom in the use of unified communications and collaboration (UCC) tools according to beancounters at IDC.

IDC numbers covering the second quarter revealed that worldwide UCC revenue increased by 25.1 percent year over year (YoY), and 12.4 percent quarter over quarter to $11.5 billion in the second quarter.

Tools that could help workers continue to be secure and productive at home were some of the largest growers in terms of revenue. IDC broke down the categories to reveal that the UC collaboration market, which includes video-conferencing software and cloud services, produced a 46.9 percent increase in revenues. The managed/hosted voice/unified communications-as-a-service (UCaaS) market also improved by 20.4 percent YoY, and enterprise video-conferencing systems were also up by 21.5 percent.

IP telephone and on-premise UC systems segment delivered a 21.8 percent decline in the second quarter.

Rotherham NHS uses Microsoft Teams for speech therapy

Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust (FT) is using Microsoft Teams to deliver speech therapy sessions to people in their own homes, reducing the need to leave the house during the coronavirus pandemic.

Rebekah Davies, a Speech and Language Therapist and Health Informatics Digital Clinician at Rotherham NHS FT, said it was using Teams in a pilot project to deliver speech therapy sessions remotely. The pilot involved 17 patients and was so successful that the sessions continued.

“When COVID-19 emerged, we had already been using Teams, so we were in a really strong position to set this up and continue helping people,” Davies said.

Her patients say they feel much more comfortable taking part in speech therapy sessions from home, without the need to travel to and enter a clinical environment.

AWS and Slack take on Microsoft

AWS and Slack have united in a project to take on Microsoft Teams.

The multi-year deal will see Slack migrate all of its audio and video call capabilities to Amazon’s Chime platform, which competes with the likes of WebEx and Zoom. Slack already used AWS as its “preferred cloud partner”.

Under the deal Slack will pay AWS at least $425 million for hosting between now and May 2025

AWS will adopt Slack internally as part of the deal, and encourage developers to manage their AWS environments on Slack’s messaging platform.

Microsoft Teams goes boom in so many different ways

Microsoft Teams’ daily users figure is up to 44 million, having rocketed more than 37 percent since last week, the vendor has said. This is despite some outages which managed to hack many users off at the beginning of the week.

Vole said that the user count last Wednesday was 32 million, but 12 million have since been added. The total figure is up from the 20 million reported in November last year.

Microsoft VP Jared Spataro said that the COVID-19 outbreak will be “a turning point for the way people will work and learn. Our customers have certainly turned to Teams during this challenging time, and we’ve seen usage spikes in markets most impacted by COVID-19.”
