CityFibre connects three million

CityFibre has connected three million premises as it continues its full-fibre network rollout to reach up to a third of the UK.

CityFibre passed 2m homes in September 2022 and is on course to deliver a million Ready For Service premises to ISPs by the end of this year.

CityFibre began the construction of its access network in 2018, commencing mobilisation in its first 12 towns and cities and has since achieved primary build complete status in multiple locations including Milton Keynes, Stirling, Peterborough and Coventry. In its most mature locations, such as Milton Keynes, ISP partners are now approaching 30 per cent take-up with other locations growing on a similar trajectory.

CityFibre lays 240 km in Bolton

CityFibre has laid a 240km of full-fibre internet beneath the streets of Bolton as part of its £37 million plan to future-proof the town’s digital connectivity.

This milestone from the UK’s largest independent full-fibre platform now means there is enough full fibre connecting the town’s homes to take in 723 laps of the University of Bolton Stadium’s pitch, home of Bolton Wanderers FC.

Steve Moore, CityFibre’s Area Manager for Bolton, said: “We’re well on our way to making Bolton world-class in terms of its digital infrastructure, and the residents here will reap the benefits for decades to come. With our network now live across many parts of the area, including Astley Bridge and Farnworth, we are pleased to enable residents to connect to the fastest and most reliable broadband services available.”

Rochford and Rayleigh next to get full fibre

CityFibre has named Rochford and Rayleigh as the next UK towns in line for a multi-million-pound investment in their digital infrastructure. This move will see the neighbouring towns join the nation’s growing list of full fibre-enabled communities.

CityFibre is set to invest £25 million in a new network that will bring fast and reliable full fibre-enabled internet services within reach of almost every home and business in the Rochford and Rayleigh areas, including the village of Great Wakering.

Across the UK, CityFibre is building new and better digital infrastructure for up to eight million homes and businesses through its nationwide full fibre rollout. 

Luton goes full fibre

CityFibre has put the finishing touches to its plans to network in Luton and Dunstable investing more than £45 million to make them two of the world’s best digitally connected communities.

This latest milestone sees thousands of homes in Luton, where the network rollout started, gain access to the best available digital connectivity. This includes premises in Stopsley, Wigmore, Round Green and Crawley, where residents can access broadband services from UK launch partner Vodafone, on selected Vodafone Pro Broadband, as well as a wide range of other internet service providers including Giganet, Air Broadband, Zybre, Yazi, No-one, IDNet, A&A, Octaplus, Link Broadband and Facto.

More of Brighton and Hove goes full fibre

Broadband users in Moulsecoomb & Bevendean, and in parts of Hanover & Elm Grove, Woodingdean and East Brighton can access some of the fastest internet services available thanks to CityFibre.

The outfit has completed its network rollout in these areas and homes have been designated ‘ready for service.’ This means residents can choose to connect to the fastest and most reliable internet services in the UK when they go live in their area.

In Brighton & Hove, residents can already sign up to UK launch partner, Vodafone, TalkTalk, Giganet, IDnet, Yayzi, Air Broadband, NoOne and Octaplus with other providers expected to join the network soon.

Nokia and CityFibre set up 25G PON network

Nokia and CityFibre have trialled the UK’s first 25G PON network to support 5G transport.

The digital campus testbed was set up at the University of Glasgow with three 5G sites backhauled to the core. In addition to carrying 5G transport on 25G PON, the same fibre runs XGS-PON to carry office traffic, thereby demonstrating the co-existence of multiple wavelengths on the PON.

CityFibre appoints BT’s Walker

CityFibre has appointed comms industry veteran, Matt Walker as its new Director of Customer Delivery and Assurance.

Walker has more than 20 years of experience in the industry, previously holding roles such as Director of Customer Service for consumer business at Openreach and senior roles in Group Strategy at BT Technology.

Walker will be directly responsible for CityFibre’s ’s provisioning, customer service, Network Operations Centre and technical support teams.

“I’ve joined a great team and my focus will be on ensuring we provide consistent, reliable performance for our partners, and for their customers. I believe transparency on performance is critical, and I look forward to building and developing the relationships we have with our partners so we can jointly innovate to co-create additional value for all and ensure a superior customer experience”, he said.

CityFibre and Virtual1 team up on full fibre business services

The UK’s third digital infrastructure platform, CityFibre, and wholesale-only network provider Virtual1 have announced a collaborative partnership to serve the UK connectivity channel with full-fibre business services.

Apparently, Virtual1 is enabling its partners to access CityFibre’s differentiated business Ethernet infrastructure in its full-fibre towns and cities across the UK from February; while CityFibre leverages Virtual1’s national network to deliver fibre options beyond its own full-fibre footprint to provide ‘off-net’ choice to its partners.

CityFibre is creating 10,000 new jobs to deliver full fibre broadband across Britain by 2025.

Broadband infrastructure provider CityFibre will create 10,000 new jobs as part of the push to deliver full-fibre broadband across Britain by 2025.

In a boost for regional economies, the company says it will invest £4bn over the next three years to recruit people from towns or cities where new fibre optic cables will be laid.

The Goldman Sachs-backed firm is competition against larger rivals such as BT’s Openreach and Liberty Global’s Virgin Media to build new networks in 100 towns and cities across the UK.

CityFibre buys Entanet

moove_1Broadband provider CityFibre has written a £29 million cheque for the connectivity service Entanet.

The outfit is also popping around the bank to get a loan for  £185 million to expand CityFibre’s fibre metro area network from 42 to 50 UK cities by 2020.

CityFibre said it expects to make around £3 million per year by 2020 from the Entanet using its base of 1,500 channel partners to reach more business customers.

The firm had previously splashed £90 million on KCOM’s national infrastructure in 2015.

“Today’s capital raising also better positions CityFibre to undertake larger projects coming forward with the public sector as well as mobile operators in readiness for their small-cell rollouts and 5G services.”
