 Tech Data promotes Watts to senior VP

 Tech Data announced that David Watts has been promoted to the role of senior vice president, UK and Ireland.

As part of a planned leadership change, Watts extends his current role as operational leader of Tech Data’s UK and Ireland business to assume the strategic development responsibilities previously held by Andy Gass. Gass continues in Tech Data’s European leadership team with an expanded role.

Watts joined Computer 2000 – which later became Tech Data UK&I – in 1998 and initially held positions in sales and management before becoming general manager of the PC division in 2003. Subsequently, he joined Samsung Electronics as head of ita UK display division before returning to Tech Data in 2007 as commercial director. He was appointed managing director, UK and Ireland, in an acting capacity in 2016 before taking the role permanently in February 2018.

Tech Data launches awards for women

Tech Data is launching an awards scheme to shine the spotlight on the invaluable contribution that women make to the advancement and success of its business in the UK and Ireland.

The company said that the idea for the Women in Tech Data Awards emerged after one of the company’s most recent Elevate events, during which colleagues from right across Tech Data meet to discuss different aspects and issues around the development and progression of female workers within the company.

David Watts, Managing Director at Tech Data, UK and Ireland, said: “The whole idea of Elevate is to encourage the progression of women within Tech Data. We thought it would be wonderful to recognise the achievements of our exceptional female colleagues. We want the Women in Tech Data Awards to be a real celebration of the tremendous amount of female talent that we have in the company, all of whom will inspire the next generation of young women onto even greater heights.”

Tech Data launches hardware apprenticeship scheme

Tech Data has launched an IT Hardware Technical Apprenticeship scheme and is hoping to mirror the success of its training for new salespeople, which is now in its third year.

Seven Tech Data colleagues who have been with the company for some time and others who are relatively new have been enrolled on the scheme. Over the next 15 months, they will be put through a series of training modules that will enable them to acquire the skills to deliver good technical services and advice.

The training modules will cover a variety of disciplines, technologies, and vendors, some of which will be provided by CompTIA. They will include foundation courses in Cybersecurity and DevOps, and ITIL4 project management training.  Apprentices will finish the course with six recognised technical accreditations.

Tech Data appoints Dixon and expands SureStep team

Cloudy outfit Tech Data has appointed Darren Dixon as Microsoft business unit manager and expanded its Microsoft SureStep team to provide enhanced support to more Microsoft partners and ensure they understand and reap the full benefits from the programmes and resources that Tech Data and Microsoft provide.

Dixon joined Tech Data eight years ago as IBM Business Development Manager and spent the last three years as Tech Data’s business manager for Lenovo Data Centre and Nutanix. In total, he has 23 years of experience working in distribution account management.

Tech Data expands AWS Practice Builder scheme

Tech Data has rolled out the second wave of its AWS Practice Builder scheme.

The programme which takes resellers to the point where they can bill for services in four months. Tech Data has been running the programme since June and has now wanted to rope in a new wave of partners.

Those that signed up in the first wave will continue to progress through the programme to get to the point where they can qualify as AWS Select tier partners.

The cunning plan is to get more resellers into a position to sell public cloud services.

Tech Data becomes distie for Glass Enterprise Edition 2

Tech Data has been appointed as an authorised distribution partner for Glass Enterprise Edition 2 in Europe.

Through this agreement, Tech Data partners across the region can access and build solutions with the Glass Enterprise Edition 2 wearable device.

Glass Enterprise Edition 2 is designed to enhance productivity and real-time communication for frontline, hands-on professionals across a variety of vertical industries, including retail, manufacturing, healthcare, field services and logistics. The wearable device – designed by Google – provides “glanceable”, voice-activated assistance that is designed to be worn throughout the working day, allowing two-way communication, just in time training and problem solving with its “see what I see” functionality.

 Tech Data wins Europe’s distie of the year title

Tech Data has been named winner in the categories of Distributor of the Year Europe and Best Customer Service Distributor Europe in the CONTEXT ChannelWatch 2020 awards, voted for by channel partners across the region who rate their distributors on a wide range of key service areas.

CONTEXT ChannelWatch is one of the world’s largest online IT-reseller surveys. As part of the survey, resellers in each country nominate distributors they work with for the CONTEXT ChannelWatch Distributor of the Year Awards. 

Tech Data works with Bang and Olufsen

Tech Data announced a new distribution partnership with the  audio brand Bang & Olufsen.

Through this partnership, Tech Data customers in Europe can access Bang & Olufsen’s range of audio products, including its portable smart home speakers which work in tandem with Google Assistant. Tech Data will support Bang & Olufsen in accelerating sales of its products in the region, particularly in non-Bang-&-Olufsen-branded retail outlets and B2B segments.

Tech Data snaps up Innovix Distribution

Tech Data has entered into a definitive agreement to buy Innovix Distribution

The IT distribution giant hopes the addition will accelerate its growth in next-generation tech across the Asia and Pacific region – including within cloud and security, as well as endpoint services. The move will also expand its presence in key markets such as Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore.

Subject to customary closing conditions, the acquisition is expected to close during the third quarter of Tech Data’s 2021 fiscal year.

Tech Data says the acquisition demonstrates its commitment to the Asia Pacific region, making up an “important, early milestone” in its “transformational” journey since being acquired by Apollo Global Management.

Tech Data will invest $750 million in digital transformation

With Tech Data’s acquisition by funds managed by affiliates of Apollo Global Management now complete, the outfit announced it will invest approximately $750 million in digital transformation initiatives over the next five years.

The company said cash will “power Tech Data’s strategy to accelerate innovation in ways that will deliver improved experiences and greater agility for businesses across the technology ecosystem”.

Tech Data chief executive officer Rich Hume said: “We continue to execute on our strategy to transform our company into one that defines a new standard of operational and cultural excellence in our industry. We believe Apollo will be an invaluable partner in helping us better enable our channel partners to bring to market the technology products and solutions the world needs to connect, grow and advance.”

Tech Data partners with StorTrec

Tech Data has entered into a pan-European agreement with storage support specialist StorTrec to provide channel partners with access to a wide range of value-added services that can be offered alongside storage products.

StorTrec provides on-site service and support options for white-box servers and storage products from leading vendors, such as Intel, Synology and Supermicro. The new offering is part of a range of services that Tech Data offers to resellers to enable them to add more value to end-user customers, drive sales growth and profitability, and enhance customer satisfaction.

Tech Data wants to train partners on Amazon cloud

Tech Data wants more than  50 partners to take part in its fully funded Amazon Web Services (AWS) training and enablement programme.

The initiative will help partners rise up through the tiers of AWS’ partner programme,

Tom Ellis, senior manager for AWS at Tech Data UK, said the programmer was an value-add that it’s delivering for partners who want to take advantage of the growth his company is seeing with AWS cloud services.

Tech Data expands configuration centre

Tech Data has boosted the size of its Midlands configuration centre so it can configure up to 10,000 units a month.

The outfit uses the site to build customised servers and desktops for channel partners, with its electrostatic discharge room the only one in the UK to hold Cisco Level 6 accreditation.

Tech Data UK endpoint solutions operations director at Kevin Wragg said: “The configuration centre at Magna is probably one of our best-kept secrets.It’s a state-of-the-art facility and with expanded capacity we can now provide services of the highest quality on even the very largest orders – whether they are for advanced servers, special notebook configurations, or simple desktops with some additional memory or disk.”

Ingram says it will fight Apple cartel fine

Ingram has said that it will ‘vigorously contest’ its €62.9 million fine for teaming up with Apple to fix prices in France.

The French competition watchdog – L’Autorité de la Concurrence – growled and issued its largest ever fine, against Apple, Tech Data and Ingram Micro, amounting to €1.24 billion in total.

Ingram Micro has rejected allegations by an antitrust authority that it fixed Apple product prices in the French market, describing them as “absolutely false”.

The watchdog claims Apple and its distributors acted like a “cartel”, illegally preventing Apple Premium Resellers (APRs) from competing on price against Apple’s own stores and subjecting the French channel to “unfair and unfavourable commercial conditions”.

Tech Data and Ingram Micro hit by Apple’s fine

France’s competition watchdog has fined Apple, Tech Data and Ingram Micro for running an illegal cartel in France, fixing prices, and “sterilising” the French channel.

Apple and distributors Tech Data and Ingram Micro have been hit by a fine worth more than €1.24 billion by an antitrust authority for allegedly fixing prices in the French market.

In the largest fine the watchdog has ever levied, L’Autorité de la Concurrence claims Apple illegally prevented its Apple Premium Resellers from competing on price, subjecting the French channel to “unfair and unfavourable commercial conditions”.
