Datto buys BitDam

Cloud-based Datto has acquired BitDam, an Israel-based cyber threat detection company to add phishing defence to its channel partners armoury.

BitDam’s cyber-defence platform secures collaboration tools, such as M365 and Google Workspace, from ransomware, malware, and phishing.

MSPs report phishing as the most common cause of successful ransomware breaches, according to Datto’s annual Global State of the Channel Ransomware Report, a survey of global MSPs.

Datto CEO, Tim Weller, said the acquisition marks an important step on his company security journey, coming on the heels of its recent launch of Ransomware Detection in Datto RMM.

“Both products deliver new revenue and margin opportunities to our 17,000 MSP partners just as cyber attacks on SMBs are proliferating. We welcome the elite BitDam security team to Datto as we continue to execute on an ambitious security roadmap for our partners.”

Datto joins Ransomware Task Force

Datto has been invited to join the Institute for Security and Technology’s Multi-Sector Ransomware Task Force as a founding member and representing the MSP community.

Datto CISO Ryan Weeks said that governments, enterprises, and SMBs  need to approach the serious threat of cyberattacks with the same collaborative concept.

“Working in silos against these sophisticated attackers is no longer an option. Threat actors have built successful businesses exploiting the fragile cyber defenses and recovery practices at many organisations. Only by working together across industries and sectors can we hope to make progress against these threat actors”, Weeks said.

Datto hosts third virtual MSP Technology Day

Cloudy outfit Datto will host its third virtual MSP Technology Day on Wednesday, 9 December, 2020.

The event will look at the two main integrated solutions MSPs use every day to run a successful, efficient, and secure business – Remote Monitoring and Management (RMM) and Professional Services Automation (PSA).

Datto’s new virtual conferencing platform will help connect the MSP community in a way more similar to Datto in-person events. Attendees will have the opportunity to interact 1:1 with Datto and with integration vendors in the RMM and PSA partner ecosystem at 35 different booths.

Datto expands sales team

Cloudy software outfit for MSPs, Datto, announced several sales leadership appointments across Asia Pacific (APAC) and Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA).

The outfit said it expanded its sales leadership team to empower MSPs with the IT resources and added expertise required to meet the increasing and accelerating digital transformation needs of the (Small and Medium Enterprises) SME market in 2021.

Datto worth $4 billion

MSP-focused Datto has raised $594 million after going public and is now worth a cool $4 billion.

The vendor’s share price rose by 20 percent on its first day of trading, before dropping back and ending around four percent up on its IPO price.

The company sold 22 million shares with a value of $27 each; the upper part of the $24 to $27 range the vendor had forecast earlier in the week.

The Connecticut-based firm submitted its IPO application at the end of last month.

Datto hosts second virtual technology day

Datto will be hosting its second virtual MSP Technology Day on September 16.

The online event follows its first virtual MSP Technology Day in June, Datto will host its next event dedicated to the tools and technologies that are driving adoption of MSP services through the pandemic.

David Totten, CTO of US Partner Ecosystem at Microsoft, will join Radhesh Menon, Chief Product Officer at Datto, for a discussion on why now appears to be a pivotal moment for the MSP industry.

Totten said: “We are seeing small and medium size businesses more eager to accelerate their digital transformation in the wake of COVID. I am looking forward to a discussion with Datto on how MSPs will play a crucial role in providing the skills and capabilities that SMBs need to succeed, grow, and profit from this transformation.”

Datto releases new SaaS protection for MSPs

Cloud based software outfit for MSPs, Datto, announced the availability of the next version of Datto SaaS Protection which it claims is more intuitive to manage and easier to integrate into existing systems.

In Datto’s 2020 Global State of the MSP Report, respondents said that 62 percent of its clients are currently using Microsoft365 cloud services and they expect that 70 percent will be using them within two years.

Datto sppoints new chief product officer  

Cloud based Datto has appointed Radhesh Menon has joined its executive management team as Chief Product Officer (CPO).

Working with Datto’s senior executive team and board of directors, Menon will oversee global product strategy to develop offerings that support MSPs and the small and medium businesses (SMBs).

Menon served as CMO at Robin.io. Before that, Menon served as general manager at Red Hat where he “bootstrapped” the OpenStack business and established it as the market leader in open cloud infrastructure. Prior to joining Red Hat, he was with Microsoft where he held various roles across Azure, Windows Server, Exchange Server, and Windows desktop products and technologies.

Its a good time to be an MSP

It is a good time to be an MSP, according to a report issued by Datto.

The report notes that 40 percent of MSPs have been in business for over 16 years, and there is a solid crop of newcomers. More than 18 percent of MSPs have been in business less than five years,  indicating that there’s plenty of room in the market and the managed services industry is attracting new blood. This could explain why 84 percent said that now is a good time to be an MSP.

It is not all great.  The issues keeping MSPs getting a good night’s kip include economic uncertainty is troubling for MSPs due to  the COVID-19 pandemic as it will likely have downstream effects for their own business.  Nearly 40 percent are expecting to reduce their growth projections by between 10-20 percent. Cybersecurity for clients remains a top pain point for 34 percent of MSPs, compared to 30 percent in 2019. More than 61 percent state that they consider anti-virus the most critical security solution for SMEs, followed by advanced firewall and RMM Other pain points include work/life balance (27 percent), hiring staff (25 percent) and sales & marketing (23 percent).

Cyber crims demand more from SMEs

Cyber criminals are getting more extortionate with their demands from SMEs, according to Datto’s annual European State of the Channel Ransomware report.

According to its numbers the average ransom requested of SMEs by hackers is increasing – now sitting at around £2,000.

Downtime related to such attacks is increasing by 300 percent in Europe, year-on-year, higher than the global average of 200 percent.

Datto pairs with Intel for MSPs

Cloud outfit Datto has teamed up with Intel on its Datto RMM, its remote monitoring and management (RMM) platform.

Datto and Intel customers will now have direct capability from Datto RMM to remotely and more securely control devices “out-of-band”, meaning the hardware is either powered off or the operating system is unresponsive. This introduces a level of access to support endpoints that MSPs would otherwise struggle to achieve using traditional remote control tools.

Ransomware is a major MSP concern

A survey of more than 1,400 MSP decision-makers that manage the IT systems for small-to-medium-sized businesses (SMBs) found that ransomware remains the most common cyber threat to SMBs.

Datto announced the findings from its fourth annual Global State of the Channel Ransomware Report.

The report found that Ransomware attacks were pervasive. The number of ransomware attacks against SMBs is on the rise. More than  85 percent of MSPs reported attacks against SMBs over the last two years, compared to 79 percent of MSPs who reported the same in 2018. In the first half of 2019 alone, 56 percent of MSPs reported attacks against SMB clients.

MSP Datto has announced several key leadership positions including a new Chief Sales Officer, Managing Director of Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), and Customer Experience Officer (CXO).

Sanjay Singh was named as Chief Sales Officer. Singh brings more than 20 years of operational and general management experience and is focused on growing the business across the globe.

MSPs capitalise on recurring services

More than 80 percent of MSPs are finding that recurring services now drive a portion of their revenue according to the latest research from Datto.

Datto’s ‘State of the MSP’ report highlighted an “industry shift” from service providers solely modelled on ad-hoc services to becoming more strategic advisors to their SMB clients.
