EE has reached another 4G milestone. After becoming the first UK telco to roll out a commercial 4G network, it is now proudly proclaiming that it already has 500,000 customers. This makes it one of the leading European 4G operators and Britain is expected to become the largest 4G market later this year.
EE also used the opportunity to introduce new shared plans and PAYG mobile broadband, which is expected to roll out over the next few weeks. So far PAYG has not been an option with 4G. Pay as you go 4G services could become very popular as cheaper 4G-enabled phones show up, and they are already starting to appear in retail.
In addition, 4G coverage in Britain is expected to reach 98 percent by the end of 2015, up from 55 percent right now.
However, EE still remains the only 4G operator in the country. Vodafone and O2 are expected to introduce their 4G service later this year, but most analysts believe the launch won’t happen before September or October. By then EE will have enjoyed a year long monopoly, which means Vodafone and O2 are already under pressure to speed up their rollout plans.
