Election will bring a rough ride to public sector suppliers

Tech suppliers to the public sector might want to buckle up because they’re in for a bit of a bumpy spell around the general election, according to TechMarketView.

TechMarketView’s top analyst, Georgina O’Toole, said the UK’s public sector tech scene is expected to take a breather for the next six weeks after Rishi Sunak decided to surprise us all with a snap election on 4 July.

“Uncertainty is a bit of a buzzkill for growth. Now, we’ve got the General Election date set in stone. But who will call the shots afterwards is anyone’s guess,” she said.

“Whitehall will kick off the ‘pre-election period’ earlier than we thought. It’s going to put the brakes on the UK public sector tech market for a bit, and even after the election, it’ll take a while for any fresh policies to kick in and for new buying and selling to get going again,” O’Toole said.

Those supplying tech to the bigwigs (like central government, defence, and health) should expect a bit of a slog for the next few months. Don’t wait for things to pick up until the fourth quarter.

“The uncertainty about who’s going to be in charge next is also likely to make the private sector think twice before making big decisions,” O’Toole advised.
