LG shows off 4K TV designs

lgscreensThe Consumer Electronics Show kicks off in Las Vegas next week and already vendors are seeking to hog the headlines by pre-announcing what they’ll be showing off.

Korean manufacturer LG said it it will show off a number of LED 4K Ultra HD TVs at the show that it will launch during 2015.

The TVs use different phosphor based LEDs and LG claims that gives better colour depth, more lifelike images, and a 25 percent increase in the colour range.

The TVs have 3840 x 2160 pixel resolution with something called inplane switching 4K panels which have the effect of allowing wider viewing angles.

LG will also show off an ultra thin Slim TV, while five of the products it will launch next year will include an ultra surround system, co-developed with Harmon/Kardon.

The company said it will also show off its smart TV software, webOS 2.0, which reduces boot time by up to 60 percent.

It will also show off an algorithm which renders SD, HD and full HD content into Ultra HD images.

AMD releases A series APU

AMD_lassAMD has added the AMD A10-7800 Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) to its A-Series 4th generation APU lineup.

The new chip has 12 compute cores (4CPU + 8 GPU) which AMD claims will unlock the designs full APU potential and Heterogeneous System Architecture (HSA) features.

The AMD A10-7800 is based around AMD Radeon R7 Series graphics and AMD’s Mantle API.
It can enable accelerated performance across select AMD Gaming Evolved partner titles.

Bernd Lienhard, corporate vice president and general manager, Client Business Unit, AMD said that the 2014 AMD A-Series APUs were the most advanced and developer friendly performance APUs from AMD to date.

The AMD A10-7800 APU supports UltraHD (4K) resolutions and new video post processing enhancements that will make 1080p videos look better when upscaled on an UltraHD-enabled monitor or TV.

The chip comes with a configurable thermal design power option (cTDP) to allow the overclocker crowd to tinker with it.

Sales will start in Japan today with worldwide availability at the end of July.

In addition, AMD announced the introduction of the AMD A6-7400K and AMD A4-7300 APUs, for the home and office market.

With the unifying FM2+ infrastructure for AMD APUs, users are enabled to build smaller lower power form factors for gaming and home theatre PCs.

Expect big TVs to get cheaper

tv58A report said that while shipments of TFT LCD panels will hit 675 milllion units in 2014, overall figures show a decline from the year before.

According to Digitimes Research, LCD TV panel shipments will only grow by 0.6 percent and there will be a glut of large panels over the winter.

As well as that, the research claims that monitor and notebook panels will decline in 2014.

But Ultra HD TV panels will grow by over 400 percent in 2014, hitting shipments of 15.3 million units.

Ultra HD TV panel shipments to hit 2.6 million units this year

lg-ultra-hdThe first Ultra HD devices are hitting the market and analysts now estimate 2.6 million Ultra HD TV panels could be shipped by the end of the year.

Since Ultra HD, or 4Kx2K is a relatively new standard, shipments last year were negligible, just 63,000 units. This year we should see the first generation of commercially viable Ultra HD televisions, but it will take years before they go mainstream.

Ultra HD sets are extremely expensive and they are pretty pointless for the time being. There is practically no 4K content out there and spending thousands on “future proof” TVs just isn’t an option for most consumers. NPD Display Search reckons panel makers are looking to speed up 4Kx2K adoption by strengthening their relationships with TV brands and stepping up their manufacturing and sales efforts.

DisplaySearch Vice President, Greater China Market, said Innolux Corp is the most aggressive Ultra HD panel maker at this point, as it is developing a full line-up of panels in the 35- to 85-inch range.

“Despite this, 4K×2K panel manufacturers’ shipments are primarily focused on 50″, 55″/58”, and 65″ sizes, which are expected to have the highest volume shipments, especially in China,” said Hsieh. “4K×2K LCD TV is the newest TV technology available, and in order for it to be successful, it will be critical for the supply chain to avoid falling behind when making their purchases, even if content is still scarce. Some panel makers are also working with design houses to develop circuits built into the panel, to enable up-scaling of HD to 4K×2K content. This will help to drive the 4K×2K LCD TV market and encourage panel makers, especially those that have already started design-in work with TV brands in 2013.”

It all sounds a tad optimistic. New chips and upscaling are no substitute for 4K content, which is simply not around and it won’t be readily available for years to come.
