RM sees slower growth

Big snail in Old TaipeiRM has seen disappointing growth over the last six months.

In its interim results for the six months ending 31 May 2022 the company said its adjusted operating profit fell 42 percent year on year to £5 million while margins fell from nine per cent to five percent.

Revenue was up four percent year-on-year to £100.3 million but RM had expected to do much better than that.

It said that performance was affected by delayed shipments in RM’s Resources division and challenges associated with the implementation of its new IT platform.

RM wins £26 million to sort out Harris Federation’s IT infrastructure.

Education supplier RM has won a contract to refresh the Harris Federation’s IT infrastructure over the next five years.

For those not in the know,  Harris Federation is a multi-academy trust in and around London. The idea of the partnership is that every academy will have a full infrastructure refresh, including increasing wireless points and switches and cabling.

RM will also replace all devices with a standard design that will allow all teachers and pupils to improve the quality of teaching further.

RM MD Jason Tomlinson said: “RM is uniquely positioned to underpin Harris Federation’s digital transformation along every step of their journey. Our ability to not only augment their IT organisation but also provide them with access to best-in-class next generation platform-delivered managed services, automation and our enhanced buying power through our unique partnerships, will give them the leverage they need to achieve their strategy and deliver the positive impact they are looking for. ”

RM chief executive Neil Martin said his outfit came up with “satisfactory” sales results in 2021.

Martin said that in the face of ongoing challenges in the education sector sales jumped 12 percent and revenue was £210.9 million for the full year ending 30 November 2021.

During the same period last year the company’s results were £189 million.

Adjusted operating profit grew 22 percent to £18.5 million but statutory profit after tax was down 45 percent, which RM said was due to “£8.3 million of investment programme costs expensed following a change in accounting treatment”.

RM jobs under threat

rm300 jobs are to go at Didcot-based RM Education.

According to the Oxford Mail, this is the second round of redundancies in the last two years.

Before the first round of redundancies, RM had over 1,200 staff but that number is now 960.

But according to the report, RM has no plans to move out of its headquarters. The company was hit when the British government axed the Building Schools for the Future scheme, instituted by the former Labour government.

RM, formerly known as Research Machines, was started when its founders sold components. It moved on to make PCs, primarily aimed at the educational market, but in more recent times has specialised in providing software for the educational market.
