Lumen sells EMEA business to Colt

Lumen Technologies has sold its European, Middle Eastern, and African (EMEA) business to Colt Technology Services in a deal that will give the outfit $1.8  billion.

Lumen plans to use the proceeds on debt reduction, which will free the company up to fund its plans for future growth, which include a focus on Network as a Service (NaaS) – specifically, the Lumen Internet on Demand offering, fibre, and Secure Access Service Edge (SASE).

Flogging the family silver has been part of the company’s strategy over the last year as things have not been going very well for the outfit.

Lumen in November 2022 announced the exclusive arrangement for the proposed sale of its EMEA business to Colt Technology Services.

The company in 2022 also finalised the $7.5 billion sale of its incumbent local exchange carrier (ILEC) business, which included its consumer, small business, wholesale and mostly copper-served enterprise customers and assets in 20 states to Brightspeed, a brand new company that launched its operations last fall.

Lumen sells EMEA business to Colt

Lumen and Colt Technology have entered into an exclusive arrangement for the proposed sale of Lumen’s Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) business to Colt for $1.8 billion.

The envisaged transaction involves Lumen flogging its EMEA business, including its terrestrial and subsea networks, data centres and network equipment to London-headquartered Colt.

When the dust has settled Lumen will invest in core businesses that are expected to drive long-term, profitable growth.

Lumen President and CEO Jeff Storey, said: “This transaction would enhance our focus so we can invest more efficiently in our most strategic opportunities – our key Enterprise and Quantum Fiber initiatives – and partner with regional leaders like Colt in Europe and Cirion in Latin America to continue serving our multinational enterprise customers.”

German enterprises dump traditional networking

Germany is seeing a dramatic move away from traditional networking technologies and increasingly adopting software-defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualisation (NFV) tools to assist with their migration to cloud environments, according to a report published today by Information Services Group.

The 2020 ISG Provider Lens Network – Software Defined Solutions and Services Partners Report for Germany found enterprises are increasingly focused on migrating their IT and network operations to the cloud and embracing SDN-related technologies to reduce complexity and risks when moving to single or multi-cloud environments.

Colt appoints Gilder to top slot

Colt Technology Services has appointed Keri Gilder as its new chief executive officer, replacing Carl Grivner.

Grivner said that during his time at the company it stayed ahead of the curve by investing in high bandwidth connectivity, blockchain and APIs, even before we saw customer demand for these innovative solutions.

“It has been a privilege to lead an organisation during such a transformation, and it’s been an honour to have the backing of the Board, my team and the wider organisation as we pushed ahead with doing some things that haven’t been done before.”

Colt gets new CEO

Colt Data Centre Services (DCS) has announced the appointment of Niclas Sanfridsson (pictured) as its new chief executive officer.

The move follows CEO Detlef Spang’s decision to retire at the end of the year. Spang  led the firm since its inception as an operationally-independent business from the Colt network business in 2015. During his tenure, Spang drove the data centre business and accelerated growth of its hyperscale footprint, Colt DCS said, enabling it to realise its vision of becoming the “most trusted and customer-centric” data centre operator.

Colt uses ADVA gear

ADVA announced that Colt Technology Services is using its ADVA FSP 150 with ConnectGuard security technology to deliver its new Ethernet Line Encryption service.

It’s said to provide end-to-end data protection for low-latency high-speed performance of up to 10Gbit/s. Getronics looks to former BT and Colt manager for COO

3565746760001_5488856853001_5488858743001-vsGetronics has named former president of BT’s global customer services Rogier Bronsgeest as its chief operating officer.

Bronsgeest worked at BT for more than six years, leaving in December 2015 to join Colt as chief customer experience officer. He will begin his new role immediately, with Getronics claiming the new hire is “the right man to help the ‘new’ Getronics fulfil its goals and ambitions”.

He said that he would continue down the path chosen in recent years and build on the new Getronics vision, go-to-markets and value propositions,

“I am looking forward to improving our user experience and helping Getronics establish itself as the preferred partner for businesses in transformation”, he said.

Bronsgeest worked more than five years at the IT services firm between 2004 and 2009 as executive vice president of global service delivery and global programme management.

Bronsgeest replaces Thomas Fetten, who left Getronics in December 2017 before joining cybersecurity specialist SecureLink as CEO in March.

There has been much motion at Getronics in the last year. CEO Mark Cook stepped down last August to be replaced by the majority shareholder of its new investor – Bottega InvestCo – Nana Baffour.
