Apple has a secret cloud

Fruity cargo cult Apple has made a great deal about the investment it has made in its datacentres but has not mentioned that it is Amazon’s biggest customer.

Apple spends over $30 million a month on Amazon Web Services (AWS), making it one of the cloud provider’s biggest customers.

The figure was revealed by CNBC and rather than the cash being reduced as it leans on its own datacentres it has increased by ten percent and is expected to grow further.

Last year, Apple pulled the plug on plans to build a £750 million datacentre in Ireland due to legal challenges.  It already has a huge, and some suspect empty data centre in the US and is said to be investing another ten billion over the pond in the next ten years.

However, Amazon and Apple have signed an agreement in recent months which would see Apple spending at least $1.5 billion on AWS over five years.

The alleged $30 million monthly spend – as we noted –  makes Apple one of AWS’ biggest customers.
